The connection between microbiota dysbiosis and liver disease has been well researched. One recent review looked at the potential of probiotic supplementation as a treatment option in various liver diseases.[1]
In this review, the authors note that probiotics show potential benefit for compensated liver cirrhosis, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic liver disease and viral hepatitis. Authors did find that there is little or no research to show a benefit for decompensated cirrhosis, when the liver cannot function fully and a transplant may be required.
Their positive effect on liver health appears to be through the modulation of microbiota composition, intestinal permeability, immune and inflammatory responses, and toxin reduction.
