Can Almonds Help Manage the Risk Factors of Heart Disease?

Almonds: a simple nutritional strategy for managing the risk factors of heart disease

Dietary modification is an important preventative strategy used to reduce the incidence of dyslipidaemia; a major risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD) and when managed properly, has also been shown to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). 

While pharmaceutical interventions have been proven to help manage dyslipidaemia, nutritional therapies are a safer option to help treat, as well as prevent, the incidence of the condition. One of the humbler dietary modifications that has been proposed to help with dyslipidaemia management, is the simple addition of almonds to a daily diet. 

A recent review has critically examined the available evidence on the efficacy of almonds in dyslipidaemia. In several of the included studies, almonds were shown to reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which is a known risk factor for CHD, and maintain high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. 

Dosages with the studies of almonds ranged from 10g to 45g daily across a six- to - twelve week period. The authors concluded that for optimal results, daily consumption of the higher dose can help to reduce dyslipidaemia and thus the risk of CVD.
